The History of Lodge Neuhaus

Late in 1977 W Bro R Barfield PGDC started to sound out local Freemasons in the Paderborn and Sennelager areas about the possibility of founding a Regular Lodge.

After numerous meetings approval was finally forthcoming in 1978 and on the 2nd December 1978 the Lodge was Consecrated by the Land Grand Master RW Bro WDJ Heath-Smith TD, assisted and accompanied by almost all of the Grand Officers. Also present were many other distinguished brethren from other Constitutions.

The ceremony took place in the NAAFI building at the Sennelager Training Centre which proved to be only just able to accommodate the number present. There were 19 Founder Members present including W Bro WL Muise the Land Grand Secretary who was later to become Grand Master.

THE DESIGN OF THE LODGE NEUHAUS JEWEL & LOGO

Our Lodge Jewel consists of a round medallion suspended on a light blue collarette ribbon. Founders (only 18 originally) wear it in medal ribbon style with a “Founder” bar on the top edge. Of the Founders only three are listed on the current, 2011, Summons as still being Members in the Lodge.

Around the outer rim are the words ‘LODGE NEUHAUS No 946’ and an ‘Acacia Twig’ and an ‘Ear of Corn’. The centre is a triangle which is divided vertically in half, less for the top part which forms a separate triangle containing a Square and Compasses. The left half shows a towered building on a green hill, representing the town and Castle of Schloss Neuhaus near Paderborn, and the Teutoburgerwald hills nearby. The right half shows a naked Bayonet on a red background to represent the Sennelager Training Area, and Military connections to the area of most members.

The name ‘LODGE NEUHAUS’ is twofold. Part being the name of our local area, and part referring to the fact that we were, at that time (1978), and for 24 years, the newest house (Lodge) in The Grand Lodge of British Freemasons in Germany.

MASONIC HISTORY

A complicated matter still open to discussion but there is evidence to connect us back to the Stone Masons who built the great Cathedrals, Castles and other places in the 1300 to 1400 AD period. There is later recorded evidence of persons such as Mr Ashmole ( who donated the Ashmolian Library at Oxford ) being made a Freemason at the time of the English Civil War.

He was a Royalist who survived being captured and became a famous person of his time. Modern Freemasonry dates from 1717 when 4 London Lodges formed the Premier Grand Lodge of England (and the world).

From that small beginning it grew to be a Global Fraternity which has had thousands of famous persons, Kings( in England most of the Georges and others in between; in Germany Fredrick the Great etc), Politicians (Churchill, 9 US Presidents starting with Washington etc), Actors & Writers ( too many to mention but including Goethe, Schiller and most others of that sort)) , Composers ( Mozart etc). The first man on the moon was a Freemason !!
